Reacting to the news that Tata steel are to sell their entire UK operation, leaving thousands of UK jobs are risk, Kate Hollern MP for Blackburn said.
“It’s with sadness that today, the future of one of Britain’s great industries, the steel industry, lies in peril.
Britain has a proud tradition of producing some of the best steel in the world and now is the time for the government to step up and do something to help.
The stakes are high, not only for the 19,000 workers and their families across the 14 Tata steel sites in the UK but also for this government, a government that call itself ‘pro-business’ cannot legitimately claim that title if it sits idly by and lets our great steel plants become mothballed.
I’m calling on the government to step in to save the steel industry and save UK jobs. We in the Labour party know that the British steel industry could be profitable again if given half a chance, the first steps towards securing the future could be that all steel used for defence manufacturing and infrastructure projects should be UK steel. The defence industry is a multi-billion pound industry, I’m very concerned that thus far there has been no guarantees that defence projects will use British steel and not nearly enough support for the industry from the defence sector.
My thoughts are with worried workers and their families during these dark days for the steel industry and repeat calls on the government to step up, step in, and do something to save our steel.”
